Love Birds: My Romeo and Juliet

I have had a couple of love birds for the past month.  I think they are so cute, but I decided to adopt them out. (I had gotten my husband a Green Cheek Conure for his birthday so I thought we should just have his bird, "Noah".)  I love the fact that people give me all these animals, but during the summer I get overwhelmed.  Then this happens!
Well, I came home and the female was gone.  I have no idea how she got out of the cage.  I was so sad, and couldn't find her anywhere.  I felt bad for the male.  The person who wanted them wanted a pair, so I told her to think about it and give me some time with the one bird. (I truly believe animals have feelings, too!  Losing a mate and changing environments is hard on people AND animals.)
This morning, I saw her sitting on the balcony just outside the rail near my foot. I always feed them in the morning and change their waters before I go downstairs for the bunnies.  Well, I opened the cage door and went in the house to change the waters out...when I returned, she was in her cage having breakfast!  The other bird sat on the side of the cage and watched her.  So I took him out and put him in their "original" cage (where she went in).  They huddled up together and she looks sleepy.
So, yeah.  I'm keeping them now.  Thus the NEW names.  Romeo and Juliet.  Adorable!!
I'll get some photos posted later.
What a happy day!

What I feed my Bunnies?

I've been getting questions about what I feed my bunnies, so I thought I would write up my routine.  Those who know me, know how much I love my furry and feathered friends. Waking up to my daily feeding routine puts me in the best of moods and I talk enjoy checking on each one...I'll explain later.

Happy, healthy bunnies make happy, calm and trusting pets.  I feed them Rabbit Complete by Purina every morning, with a fist full of  Timothy hay every day.  There are many brands of food that will be fine, I just chose Purina because I get it in bulk at the feed store and the employees suggested it.  Actually, as long as it is a reputable COMPLETE pellet, it will keep the bunnies on a predictable diet.  I don't change food brands or mess with types because it is simply not necessary.   The Timothy Hay keeps their digestive organs good, too.  I give my bunnies LOTS of water that is clean and available at all times.  This is VERY important.  I use the large water bottles and fill them daily.  A bunny with no water can overheat in a hot house in summer!  Bunnies should never be lethargic.  If you put your bunny outside, be careful he/she is not in direct sunlight.
On Sundays, I collect rose petals, strawberry leaves and orange leaves from my backyard and give each bunny a little treat.  Too much will cause runny or sticky poop so just a small handful makes them very happy.  Every couple of weeks or so, I will give them some apple branches and grape leaves/vines.  Again, these are all from my backyard.  I don't use pesticides and I know what I put on my own plants.  ALL my bunnies LOVE treat time.
Occasionally, I will give the bunnies carrot tops or bread ends (oat or wheat, no white) or kitchen pieces that we don't eat.  Be careful not to go too "treat" diet.  Like humans, bunnies can become diabetic and "human food" is very sugary.  Yup, I spoil my bunnies but with love and not food.

Okay, that pretty much makes up their diets.  Now, the "daily checking" while I feed them part.  This is nuts, but I pick them up and kiss them good morning.  The babies are so cute, I can't not cuddle them.  I talk to them and the older ones always come over for their cuddles.  While doing this, I am checking their bodies for any bumps or hair balls or torn nails on their fuzzy feet.  I honestly believe this is why my bunnies are calm and sweet.  They all have different personalities and I just adore getting to know them.  Some are just more skiddish than others, but I've never had a bunny nip or bite.  The girls are less friendly when they are pregnant, but come racing if I have food.  Similar to humans, in my opinion, they probably just don't feel that great.  Once I figure out one may be pregnant, I hold them on my lap in the evening.  I think it calms them and they are not protective when the babies come.  I feed more and pet my mamas more when the babies come.  I don't pick her up when she is close to her due date, and when she is nursing.  When she is weaning the babies, after about 6 weeks, I take the babies out and give the mama some time to herself.  I return the babies 5-6 hours later in the evening so they can still nurse.

So, this is my bunny routine.  And yup, every day.  Then, I go to work.  LOL!

Melody, such a beautiful bunny!

Melody is a 7 month old female mix.  She is part Lionhead and part Netherland Dwarf and part Dutch.  She is a bundle of orange fluff and very gentle.  She is looking for a Forever Home to relax and cuddle with her Bestest Friend.  Please do not keep Melody with a male bunny unless you are ready for babies.  Bunnies are fantastic pets, but they can multiply really fast!  (Melody is not fixed so she can surprise you with adorable babies that take time and money to care for...just sayin)

Wow, someBunny to love!

Meet Jax.  He is a 6 month old Netherland Dwarf looking for a Forever Home.  He is calm when he feels safe and will run around sniffing and wiggling and stretching in the living room.  He will sit on your lap and watch t.v. or lay out on the couch next to you.  He'd love to be your only pet, cut he gets along with others (by hiding mostly).

Very Entertaining Couple: Love Birds

Jewels and Joey, Joey and Jewels.  An adorable bonded pair of lovebirds. Jewels is a beautiful Lutino and Joey is the handsome Peach-Faced Lovebirds.
Unable to take her birds to college, I am hoping to find a really good home for this pair.  Although they are not tame, the babies could be!  They are approximately one year old and entertain themselves all day.  I've been cuddling a bunny on my coffee breaks while I watch them play and chirp.  Very adorable and fun!  They come with their cage and some start up food.

Feathered Friends are here, too!

An adorable yellow/white female parakeet.  She is about 4 months old and still trainable.  Her owner had planned to tame her but realized it takes time to do this.   Unable to do this, she is up for adoption for someone who can to spend time with her.  OR if you have a parakeet that could use a friend, "Martha" could be that friend.  She has her own cage and some food to get her started.  $30 for everything.
It's been a while!  All my bunnies are enjoying the warm but weird weather this summer.  We go from 105 degrees on day to 85 the next!  So we hop around with the A/C one day, and graze the yard the next.
Our bunny friends have come to visit, and brought me a couple of young teen bunnies.  The orange Lionhead is 4 months, and the grey Netherland Dwarf is 3 months.

We are hoping to adopt them out to their forever homes!

Here are a few pictures of some new bunnies.  Sweetie Belle had a litter of kits that are orange and white.  So sweet!  The female is Sunkissed and the male is Tango.

The one on the right is Sweetie Belle, the one on the right is Sunkissed.

The little grey fluff ball on the right is Zecora, and can be adopted in about a 2 weeks.

Special Needs Bunnies

I've recently picked up two blind bunnies.  One is a white male and looks like a Siamese cat, Snowflake. The other is an orange otter male named Stevie. .  These bunnies would need to be cared for by someone who is willing to spend a lot of time training their bunnies, however, these two special needs bunnies have incredible listening skills.  If you are interested  in providing a safe environment for one or both of these bunnies, email me at kuddlekits@gmail.com
